Amarnath cavern is a very famed holy place in Hinduism situated in the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir. It is devoted to Shiva. The cavern is located at an height of 3,888 m, about 141 km  from Srinagar, the capital of Jammu and Kashmir and reached throughPahalgam town. The holy place forms an significant part of Hinduism, and is measured to be one of the holiest shrine in Hinduism. The cavern is bordered by snowy mountains. The cavern itself is enclosed with snow most time of the year except for a short age of time in summer when it is open for pilgrims. An yearly pilgrimage is complete to the Amarnath cavern by lakhs of Hindu devotees on difficult hilly terrain to see an ice stalagmite shaped inside the cavern
The Amarnath cavern has been a place of devotion since times immemorial. There are references to the famous king Aryaraja who used to devotion a lingam shaped of ice in Kashmir. The book Rajatarangini refers to Amareshwara or Amarnath. It is believed that Queen Suryamathi in the AD gifted trishuls, banalingas and other holy emblems to this temple. Rajavalipataka, begun by Prjayabhatta has full references to the pilgrimage to Amarnath cavern. Other than this, there are more references to this pilgrimage in many additional ancient texts
